Treasury confirms start time of emergency Budget

Chancellor George Osborne is set to deliver his emergency Budget at 12.30 next Tuesday, the Treasury has confirmed.

The time of the emergency Budget on 22 June was announced in the House of Commons.

The Budget is expected to be one of the most important in a generation as the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government sets out its detailed plans to tackle the £156bn public sector deficit.

Property could be hit hard by a mix of tax rises, cuts to quangos, and reduced spending for development in areas including housing and large infrastructure projects.

This is set to build on an announcement by the government expected this week on its plan to abolish the UK’s regional development agencies.

Last month, Osborne set out the government’s initial plans for spending cuts, which it said would raise £6.2bn to tackle the deficit. Since taking power, the government has also announced a moratorium on taking new property leases or renewing leases without approval from the Treasury, and started to make big changes to the planning system under its “localism” agenda.

Property-related civil servants feature in a list of the government’s highest earners published today by the Cabinet Office.

The names of 170 mandarins earning more than £150,000 were released today, including Richard McCarthy, director general of housing and planning at the Department for Communities and Local Government, and Joe Montgomery, its director general of regions and communities. The publication is part of the coalition’s drive to introduce transparency over public sector pay.
